I was diagnosed with Lymphoma March 2008. After 7 cycles of chemotherapies, the doctor suggested me to do a peripheral blood stem cell transplant (PBSCT) to increase the chances of a permanent cure. I use this blog to account for some of my experiences and my life after the transplant

Day +214 : Pet
I am fine today.
My daughter, Xin Yi has been asking me to allow her having a dog as pet. I still have to avoid contact with dog or cats, to minimise infections.
I negotiate with her, having turtle as her pet, she agreed. However she know passing me is still not good enough, the ultimate decision is still with her mum. So, Xin Yi SMS me to remind me talk with mum first. Nowadays, kids is pretty smart in using gadget. At 8 years old, she know how use SMS. During my time , What I do at 8 year old ? I can't remember, but likely playing guli

Day + 210 : Happy Birthday to Jin Han
I am fine today.
Yesterday we celebrated my nephew, Kua Jin Han's Birthday. Ah Boy is form 4 this year, and will sit for SPM next year. I believe he will do well. I told my kids to call him Jin Han instead of Ah Boy, as too many Ah Boy in the street.
My son, Jin Hao like to play with Jin Han, he always ask if Ah Boy is coming to our house during weekend. Jin Hao had inherited a lot of toys from Ah Boy.

Day 207 : Follow Up
I am fine today.
Follow-up at SJMC on 26 May 09
My Blood Count Today:
My Blood Count Today:
Readings in square bracket [] are result from previous test.
Red Blood Count (HB) = 11.6[12.4] (Normal 13-18)
Red Blood Count (HB) = 11.6[12.4] (Normal 13-18)
Platelet = 159[178] (Normal 150-450)
White Blood Count (WBC) = 4.7[4.7] (Normal 4 - 11)
All the blood count considered OK. For the HB, as the donor is from female, it is OK as long as HB above 11.5. The most important things is , physically I feel comfortable. Don't too particular about the figure.
The result of the transplant is a change of blood to my sister's in my body and since our immune system is provided by the blood as one of its functions, effectively, I got a brand new immune system. But the new immune system is not exactly the same as my sister's, so it may fails to recognize some of my organs and starts to attack them. This is what we called graft-versus-host disease (GVHD).
The main challenge after the bone marrow transplant is the management of GVHD. Whenever there is sign of GVHD, the patients' immune system have to be suppressed through certain medication to avoid organ damages. On the other hand, suppressing the immune system too much defeat the purposes of transplant as the immune system might become too weak to clear the remaining cancer cells in the body. Therefore, this is a game of balance. A good haematologist must be a good game player in this field.
I am "fortunate" enough to have GVHD, therefore, my immune system needs to be suppressed by taking immunosuppressive drugs such as Prednisolon (steroid) and Ciclosporin. With this, I found a very good and friendly reason to turn down any products that offer a boost to immune system.
Day +206 : Pot Luck Dinner - Part 2
I am fine. Today is my routine follow up at SJMC.
Continue the pot luck dinner story..... We have Teck Ann, Kah Ban, Stanley, Yee Hong, Boon Tiam, Hiap Soon, Nelson, Chen Yoong and my two sisters joining the party. About 31 people attending the dinner. I did organised the similar party at my house few years ago.
As usual, Stanley is our camera man. We must thanks him , he got everybody a printed family photo.
The gentlemen enjoy the most is a bottle of Martell Gordon Blue. Our Camera Man need to sleep for a while before able to drive back.
This is first time Yee Hong's husband Anthony, Kah Ban , Stanley and Nelson attended our pot luck gathering. I hope everyone is enjoying the food and the chit chat. We probably will organise another gathering by end of year, would like them to join us.
There are plenty of food served, due to my mouth ulcer, I only choose the non-fried food. I enjoy spaghetti and the plum cake very much.
